Achilles International Canada

We transform the lives of people with disabilities through athletic programs and social connection

Who We Are

Achilles International Canada (AIC) provides opportunities for people with disabilities to achieve their own personal athletic goals. Currently our programs include running, walking and wheelchair rolling. We encourage all levels and abilities: people who have never run in their lives to those training for marathons.

Athletes with disabilities are paired with a trained volunteer guide to provide whatever support is needed. For example, guides provide verbal descriptions of the route, directional information on which way to go and changes in the running surface. Guiding can be done through verbal prompts or via physical connection between the blind and/or partially-sighted Achilles athlete and guide, such as with a lanyard, tether or rope. Guides might work as a team to clear the path of runners and disposed drink cups for a wheelchair athlete during a race.

Learn about our leadership team and read how joining AIC transformed the life of one person with a disability, Lisa. Her story might not be your story, yet hopefully you can find some inspiration or motivation from her experiences.

WELCOME MESSAGE FROM ACHILLES INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT AND CEO, EMILY GLASSER

Achilles International Canada (AIC) is the official chapter of Achilles International in Canada. Led by Lisa Derencinovic, President, the AIC leadership team is committed to the Achilles International mission. As active members themselves, they understand the power of Achilles.

About Our Workouts

Different chapters will have different work-out schedules so please inquire for your local schedule. Most chapters have a weekly group run or walk with opportunities to connect on an individual basis in-between the group runs for more training possibilities. There is no pressure to work beyond what your personal goals are. The group run and walks are a chance to connect with positivity and encouragement.

If you don’t have a local Achilles International Canada chapter near you and you would like to start one, please contact us.
